Overview

This combination is an experimental antiviral regimen consisting of **HCV-796** (a selective small molecule inhibitor of the hepatitis C virus RNA-dependent RNA polymerase NS5B), **peginterferon alfa-2b** (a pegylated form of interferon alfa-2b with immune-modulating and antiviral actions), and **ribavirin** (a broad-spectrum antiviral nucleoside analog). HCV-796 is designed to directly inhibit NS5B polymerase activity, blocking viral RNA replication. Peginterferon alfa-2b acts by stimulating immune responses and interfering with viral replication, while ribavirin increases viral mutagenesis leading to production of non-infectious particles and exerts weak direct inhibition of viral replication. The combination was researched primarily as a therapy for chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection.
