HCV E1E2 + MF59 is a recombinant protein subunit vaccine candidate designed to prevent hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. The vaccine consists of the envelope glycoproteins gpE1 and gpE2 from HCV genotype 1a, produced in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells, combined with the adjuvant MF59C.1—a squalene-based oil-in-water emulsion also used in licensed influenza vaccines. The formulation aims to induce both humoral and cellular immune responses against HCV by generating broadly neutralizing antibodies and T cell responses targeting the viral envelope proteins. Clinical studies have shown that this vaccine is safe and immunogenic in healthy adults as well as in patients with chronic hepatitis C when administered alone or alongside antiviral therapy[1][6][3][9]. In animal models, it has demonstrated protection against chronic infection following challenge with homologous or heterologous virus strains[1]. The vaccine elicits cross-neutralizing antibodies capable of targeting diverse genotypes of HCV[7].
