Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Healon 5 is a viscoadaptive ophthalmic viscosurgical device (OVD) containing a high concentration (23 mg/mL) of high-molecular-weight sodium hyaluronate. Developed by Johnson & Johnson Vision, it is used as a surgical aid in various ophthalmic procedures, including cataract surgery, intraocular lens (IOL) implantation, corneal transplantation, and glaucoma surgery. The product is characterized by its high viscosity and cohesive properties, which allow it to maintain a deep anterior chamber and provide superior protection to the corneal endothelium and other ocular tissues during surgical manipulation. Unlike traditional drugs, Healon 5 functions mechanically as a viscoelastic substance to facilitate surgical steps and reduce trauma. It is often described as viscoadaptive because it behaves like a cohesive OVD at low shear rates and a dispersive OVD at high shear rates.
