Overview
The Heat Stable Rotavirus Vaccine (HSRV) is an oral, live-attenuated pentavalent vaccine designed to prevent rotavirus gastroenteritis, particularly in resource-limited settings. Developed by MSD Wellcome Trust Hilleman Laboratories, the vaccine utilizes the same five human-bovine reassortant rotavirus strains (G1, G2, G3, G4, and P[8]) found in Merck's RotaTeq. Its primary innovation is a lyophilized formulation that maintains potency at high temperatures (up to 45°C for several months), significantly reducing the need for a continuous cold chain. Clinical studies have demonstrated safety and immunogenicity comparable to existing vaccines.
