HEMACORD is an allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell therapy derived from human umbilical cord blood, developed by the New York Blood Center's National Cord Blood Program. It was the first hematopoietic progenitor cell (HPC) therapy to receive FDA approval. The product consists of hematopoietic progenitor cells, which, after intravenous infusion, migrate to the bone marrow where they engraft and differentiate into mature blood cells (erythrocytes, leukocytes, and platelets). This process, known as hematopoietic reconstitution, is used to treat patients with hematologic malignancies such as leukemia and lymphoma, myelodysplastic syndromes, bone marrow failure syndromes like severe aplastic anemia, and various inherited metabolic or immune system genetic diseases. HEMACORD provides a vital alternative for patients who lack a HLA-matched related donor.
