Hematopoietic Progenitor Cells, Cord Blood (HPC-C) consist of blood-forming stem cells harvested from the umbilical cord and placenta following childbirth. These cells are utilized in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) to treat patients with hematologic malignancies, such as leukemia, lymphoma, and myelodysplastic syndromes, as well as certain inherited metabolic or immune system disorders. The National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) maintains a centralized registry and standardized protocols for the collection, testing, and distribution of these units to ensure high-quality grafts and facilitate donor-recipient matching. Once infused, the progenitor cells migrate to the patient's bone marrow, where they engraft and initiate the production of functional red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, effectively reconstituting the recipient's hematopoietic and immune systems.
