Overview

Hematoporphyrin + pirarubicin is a combination therapy being developed and evaluated by the Cancer Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and its Shenzhen Hospital for the treatment of bladder cancer. This regimen combines the cytotoxic effects of pirarubicin, an anthracycline derivative that inhibits DNA synthesis by intercalating into DNA and inhibiting topoisomerase II, with the photodynamic effects of hematoporphyrin. Hematoporphyrin serves as a photosensitizing agent that, upon exposure to specific laser light during intravesical photodynamic therapy (PDT), generates singlet oxygen and other reactive oxygen species, leading to localized tumor cell death. The combination is typically administered via intravesical instillation to target superficial bladder tumors, aiming to enhance therapeutic efficacy and reduce the high recurrence rates associated with standard treatments.
