Hemin + MIL88 (also referred to as Hemin@MIL88) is a research-stage, catalase-mimicking nanomaterial composed of hemin, an iron-containing metalloporphyrin, loaded onto the metal-organic framework (MOF) MIL-88. It is designed to function as an artificial enzyme that catalyzes the decomposition of endogenous hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) into oxygen ($O_2$) within the tumor microenvironment. This process is intended to alleviate tumor hypoxia, a significant barrier to the efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT). In preclinical studies, Hemin@MIL88 has been integrated into injectable G-quadruplex hydrogel systems (such as HMI@GEL) alongside other therapeutic agents like metformin and indocyanine green (ICG) to provide a synergistic approach to breast cancer treatment through combined photothermal therapy, enhanced PDT, and mitochondrial respiration inhibition.
