Overview

A **hemostatic matrix + bovine thrombin** is a combination topical hemostatic agent composed of a gelatin-based matrix (usually derived from bovine collagen) and bovine thrombin. The gelatin matrix provides a mechanical barrier and tamponade effect, swelling to conform to wound contours and promoting initial platelet activation at the bleeding site. When the bovine thrombin component is added, it enzymatically converts fibrinogen to fibrin at the wound site, accelerating stable clot formation and supporting hemostasis via the final common coagulation pathway. This combination is used as an adjunct to conventional surgical methods for the control of oozing or minor bleeding during surgery, generally when standard measures are ineffective or impractical. With approval for use in a range of surgical fields, its effectiveness is achieved both through physical (gelatin matrix) and enzymatic (thrombin) hemostatic mechanisms. The gelatin matrix is bioresorbable, typically absorbed within several weeks. While generally safe, risks include immunologic reactions, particularly with bovine thrombin (such as antibody development and possible coagulopathies), and rarely, complications like thromboembolism if the product is inadvertently introduced into blood vessels[1][2][3][4][5][8].
