Overview

HEP-40 + chitosan is a combination product where the primary active ingredient is **HEP-40**, a highly deacetylated (93%), low-molecular weight chitosan (approximately 40,000 Daltons), manufactured using enzymatic hydrolysis of chitosan derived from chitin in the exoskeleton of crustaceans[1][2]. **HEP-40** functions by binding via its positively charged amino groups to negatively charged lipids and fats in the gastrointestinal tract, limiting their absorption and as a result reducing levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and total cholesterol. It is considered **efficacious and safe** for lowering LDL-C in treatment-naive patients with mild-to-moderate hypercholesterolemia, but is less effective than statins[1][2]. Most adverse reactions are mild and related to the gastrointestinal system (such as constipation and diarrhea).
