Heparin + insulin is a combination of two drugs, heparin and insulin, used together in certain clinical settings. Heparin is an anticoagulant that works by activating antithrombin III, which inhibits thrombin (factor IIa) and factor Xa, thereby preventing blood clot formation[1][2][3]. Insulin is a peptide hormone that regulates glucose metabolism by promoting cellular uptake of glucose and lowering blood sugar levels. This combination has been studied for synergistic effects in specific conditions such as severe acute pancreatitis, where intensive insulin therapy combined with low molecular weight heparin may improve microcirculation, reduce systemic inflammation, prevent multiple organ failure (MOF), shorten healing time, decrease fatality rate, and improve prognosis[8]. However, there are also reports that heparin can impair skeletal muscle glucose uptake by inhibiting insulin signaling pathways[6].
