Overview

Engerix-B + Havrix refers to the combination or co-administration of two distinct vaccines developed by GSK: Engerix-B, a recombinant hepatitis B vaccine, and Havrix, an inactivated hepatitis A vaccine. While often administered separately, they are also available as a fixed-dose combination product branded as Twinrix. The combination is indicated for active immunization against infections caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV) and the hepatitis B virus (HBV) in susceptible individuals. The hepatitis A component consists of the HM175 strain of HAV, which is inactivated with formaldehyde and adsorbed onto aluminum hydroxide. The hepatitis B component contains purified surface antigen (HBsAg) produced by recombinant DNA technology in Saccharomyces cerevisiae (yeast) cells and adsorbed onto aluminum phosphate. By inducing the production of specific antibodies against both viruses, the vaccine provides long-term protection against hepatitis A and B, which are major causes of viral hepatitis worldwide.
