The adsorbed inactivated hepatitis A vaccine, developed and produced by the Butantan Foundation, is an immunizing agent indicated for the active prevention of infection caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV). The vaccine is composed of purified hepatitis A virus (typically the HM175 strain) grown in human diploid cells (MRC-5), which is subsequently inactivated with formaldehyde and adsorbed onto an aluminum hydroxide adjuvant to enhance its immunogenicity. Upon administration, the vaccine stimulates the immune system to produce specific neutralizing IgG antibodies against HAV, providing long-term protective immunity. It is a monovalent vaccine administered via intramuscular injection and is a key component of the Brazilian National Immunization Program (PNI), primarily targeted at children and high-risk populations to reduce the incidence of hepatitis A.
