Overview

The hepatitis A vaccine (H2 strain) is a live attenuated vaccine designed for the prevention of infection caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV). It was developed in China, primarily at the Zhejiang Academy of Medical Sciences by Mao Jiangsen and his team, utilizing the H2 strain which was isolated from an infected patient and subsequently attenuated through serial passage in human diploid cell lines (such as 2BS or KMB17). Unlike inactivated HAV vaccines, the H2 strain vaccine induces immunity by mimicking a mild, asymptomatic infection, leading to the production of neutralizing antibodies and the activation of cellular immune responses. This specific strain has been widely used in China's Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) due to its high immunogenicity, safety profile, and the convenience of requiring fewer doses than inactivated counterparts for initial protection.
