Overview

Hepavax-Gene is a recombinant hepatitis B vaccine containing the hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). It is produced using recombinant DNA technology, typically expressed in yeast systems such as *Hansenula polymorpha*. The vaccine consists of purified HBsAg adsorbed onto aluminum hydroxide, which serves as an adjuvant to enhance the host's immune response. It is indicated for active immunization against infection caused by all known subtypes of the hepatitis B virus (HBV). Clinical research, including studies by Chiang Mai University, has explored optimized dosing strategies for Hepavax-Gene in immunocompromised populations, such as HIV-infected adults, to improve seroconversion rates through intensive or double-dose regimens. A thiomersal-free version, Hepavax-Gene TF, is also available.
