The hepatitis B vaccine (Saccharomyces cerevisiae recombinant) is a non-infectious subunit viral vaccine designed to prevent infection by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). It is produced using recombinant DNA technology, where the gene encoding the hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) is cloned into yeast cells, specifically *Saccharomyces cerevisiae*. These genetically engineered yeast cells then express and produce the HBsAg protein, which is subsequently purified and formulated into the vaccine. This vaccine stimulates the body's immune system to generate specific antibodies against HBsAg, thereby conferring active immunity and protection against HBV infection. This type of vaccine has been widely approved and used globally since the mid-1980s, with prominent examples including Recombivax HB (Merck) and Engerix-B (GlaxoSmithKline).
