The hepatitis B vaccine recombinant (marketed as Engerix-B by GSK) is a noninfectious, recombinant DNA vaccine indicated for immunization against infection caused by all known subtypes of the hepatitis B virus. The active ingredient is the hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), which is produced in yeast cells (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) using recombinant DNA technology. The purified HBsAg assembles into spherical particles and is adsorbed onto aluminum hydroxide as an adjuvant to enhance immunogenicity. Upon administration, the vaccine induces specific humoral antibodies against HBsAg (anti-HBs antibodies). An anti-HBs antibody titre above 10 IU/L correlates with protection from HBV infection. More than 90% of healthy adults and children develop protective antibody levels after completing the primary vaccination schedule[2][3][4][5][7].
