Overview
This is a combination therapy consisting of the standard recombinant hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccine and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), used primarily as an immunization strategy for individuals who are non-responsive to conventional HBV vaccination or as a potential therapeutic approach in chronic HBV infection. The mechanism involves using GM-CSF as an adjuvant to enhance the immune response by promoting dendritic cell maturation and antigen presentation, thereby increasing both humoral (antibody-mediated) and cellular immune responses against the hepatitis B surface antigen. Studies have shown that this combination can improve seroconversion rates and antibody titers in non-responders, though results may vary depending on dosing regimens. The approach is being explored for both prophylactic re-vaccination of non-responders and as a therapeutic immunotherapy for chronic HBV patients[1][2][5].
