Yikening (also known as Hecolin) is a recombinant protein subunit vaccine developed by Xiamen Innovax Biotech for the prevention of hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection. It is the first HEV vaccine to be licensed globally, having received approval from the China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA) in 2011. The vaccine is composed of virus-like particles (VLPs) formed by the p239 protein, a truncated version of the HEV genotype 1 capsid protein expressed in *Escherichia coli*. Yikening is administered via intramuscular injection and is designed to induce high titers of neutralizing antibodies to protect against HEV infection. It is particularly recommended for high-risk populations, including travelers to endemic regions, women of childbearing age, and individuals with underlying chronic liver diseases. Ongoing clinical research continues to evaluate its safety and immunogenicity in specific patient populations, such as those with chronic hepatitis B-related cirrhosis.
