Overview

This is a combination immunization regimen consisting of the heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) and the trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine (TIV). The heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine targets seven serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae and is designed to prevent invasive pneumococcal diseases such as pneumonia, meningitis, and bacteremia. The trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine contains antigens from three different strains of influenza virus—typically two A subtypes (H1N1 and H3N2) and one B lineage—and is used for seasonal prevention of influenza. When administered together, this combination has been shown to reduce rates of febrile respiratory tract infections, PCR-confirmed influenza cases, acute otitis media episodes, primary care visits for respiratory illness, and antibiotic prescriptions during flu seasons in children[2]. The mechanism involves stimulating adaptive immune responses against both S. pneumoniae polysaccharide antigens (conjugated to a carrier protein) and the selected viral hemagglutinin proteins from the included flu strains[2][5][7].
