Overview

HIV-specific CD8+ T cells are an autologous cell therapy consisting of cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) that have been isolated from a patient, expanded ex vivo, and enriched for reactivity against specific HIV-1 antigens (such as Gag, Pol, or Env). These cells are then re-infused into the patient, typically those on stable suppressive antiretroviral therapy (ART), with the goal of enhancing the immune system's ability to identify and destroy cells harboring latent or active HIV infection. This approach, known as adoptive T-cell therapy, aims to achieve immune reconstitution and reduce the viral reservoir, potentially leading to long-term viral control in the absence of ART.
