HIV-specific CD8 cells (Guangzhou 8th People's Hospital)

HIV-specific CD8 cells are an autologous cell therapy being developed by Guangzhou 8th People's Hospital for the treatment of HIV infection. The therapy involves the isolation, expansion, and transfusion of CD8+ T cells (cytotoxic T lymphocytes) that are specifically primed to recognize and eliminate HIV-infected cells. The primary objective of this intervention is to reconstitute the patient's cellular immune response against the virus, which is typically compromised or exhausted in chronic HIV infection. By increasing the frequency and activity of these specific effector cells, the therapy aims to achieve durable control of viral replication, potentially allowing for the discontinuation of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) and moving toward a functional cure for AIDS.
