HMB002 is an investigational cell-based therapy developed by King's College Hospital NHS Trust for the treatment of pediatric acute liver failure. The product consists of human hepatocytes and mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) co-encapsulated within peptide-modified alginate microbeads. Administered as a single intraperitoneal infusion, HMB002 is designed to provide temporary liver support functions, including synthetic and detoxification activities, while the patient's native liver regenerates or until a suitable donor organ becomes available for transplantation. The alginate encapsulation serves as an immunoprotective barrier, protecting the cells from the recipient's immune system and eliminating the need for systemic immunosuppression. The microbeads are designed to be retrieved via laparoscopy within 4 to 24 weeks post-infusion.
