Overview

Holcus lanatus pollen allergoid, glutaraldehyde-modified is a polymerized allergen extract derived from the pollen of *Holcus lanatus* (velvet grass). Developed by Inmunotek S.L., this biologic is chemically modified using glutaraldehyde to create an allergoid. This process involves the polymerization of allergen molecules, which significantly reduces their IgE-binding capacity (allergenicity) while preserving the T-cell epitopes necessary for inducing immunological tolerance (immunogenicity). This reduction in allergenicity allows for the administration of higher allergen doses with a lower risk of systemic allergic reactions. It is primarily used as a component of allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) for patients suffering from allergic rhinitis, rhinoconjunctivitis, and mild to moderate asthma triggered by grass pollens. The treatment is typically administered via subcutaneous injection (SCIT) and aims to desensitize the immune system by shifting the response from a Th2-dominated allergic profile to a Th1/Treg-mediated tolerant state, often characterized by an increase in allergen-specific IgG4 antibodies.
