Drug intelligence / Profile preview
A combination of raw natural honey and Nigella sativa (black cumin) seeds investigated for the treatment of COVID-19. This natural product intervention was evaluated in the HNS-COVID-PK trial, a multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled study conducted in Pakistan by Dr. Sohaib Ashraf and colleagues at the Shaikh Zayed Post-Graduate Medical Institute. The regimen consists of 1 g/kg/day of honey and 80 mg/kg/day of Nigella sativa seeds administered orally for up to 13 days. The combination is hypothesized to provide synergistic benefits through antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory mechanisms. Clinical findings published in 2023 indicated that the intervention significantly improved symptom recovery, viral clearance, and 30-day mortality in patients with moderate to severe COVID-19.
