Overview
Houttuynia cordata is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) derived from the fresh aerial parts of *Houttuynia cordata* Thunb. (Saururaceae). It is commonly formulated as an injection (Houttuynia cordata injection, HCI) or oral preparation. The drug exhibits broad-spectrum antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties, primarily driven by its active volatile oils (such as decanoylacetaldehyde and methyl nonyl ketone) and flavonoids (such as quercitrin). Developed and manufactured by Hunan Zhengqing Pharmaceutical (also referred to as Hunan Zhongqi Pharmaceutical in some contexts), Houttuynia cordata injection is approved in China and included in the National Medical Insurance catalog. It is clinically indicated for the treatment of lung abscesses caused by phlegm-heat congestion, damp-heat urinary tract infections, and carbuncles caused by exuberant pathogenic heat.
