HT231 (heparin)

HT231 is a nebulized formulation of unfractionated heparin (UFH) being developed by Heparin Therapeutics for the treatment of severe respiratory infections, including Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), Acute Lung Injury (ALI), and COVID-19. Unlike systemic heparin, nebulized HT231 targets the alveolar space to address local coagulopathy and inflammation. Its multi-mechanistic profile includes anticoagulant activity via the inhibition of alveolar coagulation pathways, anti-inflammatory effects through the neutralization of neutrophil elastase, histones, and the complement cascade, and antiviral properties by blocking viral adhesion (e.g., SARS-CoV-2). It also modulates IP3-mediated signaling and cytokine/chemokine activity. The drug is currently in Phase 2/3 development.
