Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Huanglian decoction + huangqin huashi decoction is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) combination therapy developed by the Tianjin Binhai New Area Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine for the treatment of metabolic syndrome. This combination merges two classical formulas: Huanglian Decoction, which traditionally harmonizes the middle jiao and clears heat, and Huangqin Huashi Decoction, which resolves dampness and clears heat. The therapy is specifically indicated for patients presenting with the damp-heat in the middle jiao pattern. Mechanistically, the combination targets multiple metabolic pathways; active constituents like berberine (from Coptis chinensis) and baicalin (from Scutellaria baicalensis) are known to activate AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and modulate peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs), leading to improved insulin sensitivity, regulated lipid profiles, and reduced systemic inflammation. Clinical research at the developing institution suggests it effectively reduces body mass index, blood glucose, and blood pressure in affected populations.
