Human albumin + propofol is an experimental diagnostic contrast agent mixture developed by researchers at the University of California, San Diego for use in transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) bubble studies. The mixture, typically composed of 7 mL of 5% human albumin and 3 mL of propofol (10 mg/mL), is agitated to create stable microbubbles that provide superior ultrasound contrast compared to standard agitated saline. While human albumin is traditionally used as a plasma expander and propofol as a sedative-hypnotic, this specific combination leverages their physical properties to enhance the visualization of cardiac shunts and other structural abnormalities during cardiac surgery. It is currently being evaluated in clinical trials (e.g., NCT02613052) to determine its efficacy and safety relative to traditional contrast agents.
