Overview

Human amniotic epithelial cells (hAECs) are an investigational cell therapy developed by the International Peace Maternity and Child Health Hospital (IPMCH) for the treatment of primary ovarian insufficiency (POI) and premature ovarian failure (POF). Derived from the human amniotic membrane of the placenta, hAECs possess stem-cell-like properties, including low immunogenicity and multi-lineage differentiation potential. The therapy is administered via bilateral ovarian artery infusion, allowing the cells to migrate to the injured ovarian tissue. Once implanted, hAECs work by inhibiting the apoptosis of granulosa cells, promoting angiogenesis to restore blood flow, and improving the overall ovarian microenvironment (niche). Phase 1 clinical trial results have demonstrated that the transplantation is safe, well-tolerated, and may temporarily improve hormone levels, ovarian size, and menopausal symptoms in patients.
