Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Wilate is a high-purity, plasma-derived, freeze-dried concentrate containing human von Willebrand factor (VWF) and human coagulation factor VIII (FVIII) in a physiological 1:1 activity ratio. It is manufactured by Octapharma and is indicated for the treatment and prophylaxis of bleeding in patients with von Willebrand disease (VWD) and Hemophilia A. VWF serves two primary roles: it promotes platelet aggregation and adhesion to damaged vascular endothelium and acts as a carrier protein to stabilize FVIII, protecting it from premature degradation. FVIII is an essential cofactor in the intrinsic pathway of the coagulation cascade, facilitating the activation of Factor X, which ultimately leads to the formation of thrombin and a stable fibrin clot. The drug is administered intravenously and is being evaluated in clinical settings for pharmacokinetic-guided dosing strategies to optimize treatment outcomes.
