Quixil is a human-derived fibrin sealant (surgical sealant) used intraoperatively to promote hemostasis and tissue sealing. It is a biological product consisting of two primary components: a concentrated human fibrinogen complex (which also contains fibronectin and coagulation factor XIII) and human thrombin. When these components are mixed during topical application, thrombin enzymatically converts fibrinogen into fibrin, and factor XIII cross-links the fibrin to form a stable, insoluble clot. This process replicates the final step of the natural physiological coagulation cascade. Quixil was specifically developed to reduce post-operative complications such as seroma formation (fluid accumulation), particularly in surgeries like breast cancer resection. It was originally developed by Omrix Biopharmaceuticals and is marketed by Ethicon, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. Note that earlier formulations of Quixil contained tranexamic acid as a stabilizer, a component removed in successor products like Evicel to avoid potential neurotoxicity in certain applications.
