Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ivisel (marketed globally as Evicel) is a human plasma-derived fibrin sealant consisting of two active components: human clottable protein (predominantly fibrinogen) and human thrombin. Developed by Omrix Biopharmaceuticals (a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson's Ethicon), it is designed to mimic the final stages of the physiological coagulation cascade. Upon mixing during topical application, thrombin cleaves fibrinogen into fibrin monomers, which polymerize to form a stable fibrin clot that promotes hemostasis and tissue sealing. Unlike earlier-generation fibrin sealants, Ivisel is free of synthetic or bovine-derived aprotinin and tranexamic acid, reducing the risk of hypersensitivity and neurotoxicity. It is approved as an adjunct to hemostasis in various surgical settings, including vascular surgery and dura mater closure, and is under clinical investigation for sutureless urethrovesical anastomosis in radical prostatectomy.
