Overview

Walrinvax is a bivalent human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine developed by Shanghai Zerun Biotechnology, a subsidiary of Walvax Biotechnology. It is designed to protect against high-risk HPV types 16 and 18, which are the primary causes of cervical cancer and its precursor lesions globally. The vaccine consists of recombinant L1 capsid proteins expressed in the yeast *Pichia pastoris*, which self-assemble into non-infectious virus-like particles (VLPs). It is formulated with an aluminum hydroxide adjuvant to enhance the immune response. Walrinvax was approved by China's National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) in March 2022 for use in females aged 9 to 30 years. It represents the first yeast-expressed HPV vaccine to reach the market, providing a cost-effective alternative to vaccines produced in insect-cell or E. coli systems.
