Human papillomavirus type 11 L1 protein, adsorbed, is a recombinant protein subunit vaccine component designed to prevent infections caused by Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Type 11. The vaccine consists of the L1 major capsid protein, which self-assembles into non-infectious virus-like particles (VLPs) that are morphologically similar to the native HPV virion but lack viral DNA. These VLPs are adsorbed onto an adjuvant, typically amorphous aluminum hydroxyphosphate sulfate (AAHS), to enhance the immune response. Upon administration, the vaccine induces the production of neutralizing antibodies against HPV 11, a low-risk genotype primarily associated with genital warts (condyloma acuminata) and recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP). While most commonly utilized as a constituent of multivalent vaccines such as Gardasil and Gardasil 9, monovalent formulations have been evaluated in clinical trials to establish the safety and immunogenicity of the VLP platform. The University of Antwerp, particularly through its Centre for the Evaluation of Vaccination, has played a significant role in the clinical development and validation of these HPV vaccine technologies.
