Overview

Human papillomavirus type 45 L1 protein, adsorbed is a monovalent vaccine candidate or vaccine component consisting of the recombinant L1 major capsid protein of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) type 45. The L1 proteins self-assemble into virus-like particles (VLPs) that mimic the native viral structure but are non-infectious as they lack the viral genome. These VLPs are adsorbed onto an adjuvant, typically an aluminum-based salt, to enhance the immune response. The vaccine is designed to induce high titers of type-specific neutralizing antibodies to prevent infection by HPV type 45, a high-risk genotype strongly associated with cervical cancer and other anogenital malignancies. While HPV 45 is now a component of the 9-valent HPV vaccine (Gardasil 9), monovalent formulations have been evaluated in clinical trials, including those conducted by the University of Antwerp, to assess safety, immunogenicity, and cross-protection against related HPV types.
