Overview

Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines are biologics designed to prevent infection by high-risk and low-risk strains of the human papillomavirus. These vaccines typically utilize recombinant virus-like particles (VLPs) composed of the L1 major capsid protein of specific HPV genotypes. They are primarily indicated for the prevention of cervical, vulvar, vaginal, and anal cancers, as well as genital warts and oropharyngeal cancers. Recent clinical research, including studies by Charles University, has explored the adjuvant effect of HPV vaccination in women undergoing surgical conization to reduce the recurrence of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 or worse (CIN2+). By inducing neutralizing antibodies, the vaccine prevents viral entry into host cells, thereby providing long-term protection against HPV-related malignancies.
