Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Human placental extract (HPE), also known by the product name Protego-PD for its lead indication, is a complex biological extract developed by Plakous Therapeutics. Derived from the human placenta after delivery, the extract contains a multi-component mixture of naturally occurring proteins, growth factors, cytokines, and anti-inflammatory factors. It is designed to orchestrate regenerative and anti-inflammatory cellular responses to repair organs damaged by inflammation-driven diseases. The lead program, Protego-PD, is being developed for the prevention of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in preterm infants and has received FDA Orphan Drug and Rare Pediatric Disease designations. Preclinical research also explores its potential in treating osteoarthritis, respiratory distress, and various neurodegenerative and metabolic conditions.
