Human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) are an allogeneic cell therapy developed by the Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University for the treatment of severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in preterm infants. BPD is a chronic lung disease characterized by impaired alveolarization and vascular development. These hUC-MSCs are administered intravenously and function primarily through paracrine mechanisms, secreting anti-inflammatory cytokines and growth factors that modulate the immune response and promote the repair of damaged lung tissue. Clinical evaluation includes the MSBDT Phase I trial and the MSC-BPD Phase II trial, which assess safety, efficacy, and long-term outcomes in neonates with moderate to severe BPD.
