Human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSC) is a cell therapy being developed by Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center for the treatment of Alport syndrome, a hereditary renal disease. These cells are characterized by their anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic properties, which aim to ameliorate renal injury and prevent podocyte apoptosis. In clinical trials involving children with early-stage Alport syndrome and chronic kidney disease (CKD) stages I-III, the therapy is administered via peripheral intravenous infusion to evaluate its safety and efficacy in slowing disease progression toward end-stage renal disease. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that hUC-MSC treatment can extend survival and reduce renal damage in Alport syndrome models.
