Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) are a type of multipotent stem cell being developed by Southwest Hospital in China for the local treatment of oral chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD). Oral cGVHD is a common and debilitating complication of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT), presenting with oral ulcers, lichen planus-like lesions, and pain. These MSCs are applied topically via a dressing to the oral mucosa, where they exert immunomodulatory effects. The mechanism involves regulating the balance between Th1 and Th2 helper T-cell subsets and promoting T-cell differentiation toward a Th1 direction to mitigate the donor-derived immune attack on the recipient's oral tissues. This approach aims to provide a low-toxicity alternative to systemic immunosuppressants and local corticosteroids.
