Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) is an investigational cell-based therapy developed by Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology for the treatment of severe COVID-19 pneumonia. This biologic therapy consists of mesenchymal stem cells derived from human umbilical cord tissue, which possess potent immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties. The cells are administered via intravenous infusion to mitigate the 'cytokine storm' associated with severe SARS-CoV-2 infection, reduce lung inflammation, and promote the regeneration of damaged pulmonary tissue. Clinical evaluation in Phase 2 trials (NCT04288102) has indicated that UC-MSC treatment can improve lung lesion recovery and maintain a favorable safety profile over long-term follow-up.
