Overview

hUC-MSCs (human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells) are a type of multipotent stem cell harvested from the umbilical cord tissue, specifically the Wharton's jelly. These cells are characterized by their potent immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and regenerative properties. In the treatment of acute ischemic stroke (AIS), hUC-MSCs are administered via intravenous infusion to leverage their ability to home to sites of injury and secrete a wide array of paracrine factors, including neurotrophic factors (such as BDNF and GDNF) and angiogenic factors (such as VEGF). These factors help to dampen the post-ischemic inflammatory response, protect surviving neurons from apoptosis, and stimulate the repair of the neurovascular unit. Shenzhen Wingor Biotechnology is currently evaluating this cell therapy in a Phase IIa clinical trial to assess its safety and efficacy in improving functional recovery for patients following a stroke.
