Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (HUCMSC) combined with a collagen scaffold is an investigational regenerative therapy being evaluated for the treatment of diabetic erectile dysfunction. Developed by investigator Leilei Zhu, the treatment involves the intracavernous injection of HUCMSCs, either alone or loaded onto a collagen biomaterial scaffold. The therapeutic rationale is based on the ability of mesenchymal stem cells to secrete paracrine factors, such as growth factors and cytokines, which promote angiogenesis, reduce apoptosis, and stimulate the regeneration of cavernous nerves and smooth muscle cells. The collagen scaffold is intended to provide a supportive microenvironment that enhances the retention, survival, and therapeutic efficacy of the stem cells within the penile tissue, particularly in patients who have failed conventional PDE-5 inhibitor therapy.
