Overview

Humatrope + propranolol is a combination therapy consisting of recombinant human growth hormone (somatropin, marketed as Humatrope) and the non-selective beta-adrenergic blocker propranolol. Somatropin acts as a replacement for endogenous growth hormone, stimulating linear growth, increasing protein synthesis, and modulating metabolism. Propranolol is a beta-blocker that reduces heart rate and cardiac workload by antagonizing beta-adrenergic receptors. This combination has been studied in severely burned pediatric patients to attenuate hypermetabolism and inflammation without causing the adverse metabolic side effects associated with somatropin alone. The rationale is that while somatropin promotes anabolic recovery after trauma or burns, it can also induce hyperglycemia and increased lipids; co-administration with propranolol mitigates these effects by improving fat metabolism, insulin sensitivity, reducing resting energy expenditure, and blunting inflammatory responses[1].
