Overview

This is a combination of two agents, hyaluronidase and aflibercept. Aflibercept is a recombinant fusion protein that acts as a soluble decoy receptor for vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A), vascular endothelial growth factor B (VEGF-B), and placental growth factor (PIGF), thereby inhibiting angiogenesis and vascular permeability. It is primarily used to treat neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration, diabetic macular edema, retinal vein occlusion-related macular edema, diabetic retinopathy, and retinopathy of prematurity[1][3][6]. Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that temporarily increases tissue permeability by depolymerizing hyaluronic acid in the extracellular matrix; it can be used to enhance the dispersion or absorption of other injected drugs. The combination has been studied in clinical trials for acute thyroid eye disease to assess safety and tolerability when administered via sub-tenon injection[5].
