Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This is a combination of two drugs, hyaluronidase and dexmedetomidine, used together primarily as adjuvants in pain management procedures such as epidural injections for chronic pain conditions (e.g., failed back surgery syndrome). - **Hyaluronidase** is an enzyme that depolymerizes hyaluronic acid in connective tissue, increasing tissue permeability and facilitating the dispersion and absorption of co-administered drugs. It acts by breaking down glucosamine and hyaluronic acid, disrupting collagen bundles to reduce fibroplasia and mechanical barriers[4][8][10]. - **Dexmedetomidine** is a highly selective alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist with sympatholytic properties. It provides analgesia by inhibiting pain signal transmission at the dorsal horn neurons through pre- and post-synaptic alpha-2 receptor activation, reducing inflammation and chronic allodynia[4][7]. The combination has been studied for its ability to improve pain relief outcomes when added to steroid-based epidural injections. Both agents have shown efficacy in reducing pain scores and disability indices compared to baseline; however, dexmedetomidine may provide more substantial long-term benefits than hyaluronidase alone[4][7].
