Overview

Hydralazine + magnesium refers to a combination of the antihypertensive agent hydralazine and a magnesium salt (such as magnesium sulfate or other forms). Hydralazine is a direct-acting vasodilator that works primarily by relaxing arteriolar smooth muscle, thereby reducing peripheral vascular resistance and lowering blood pressure. Magnesium, depending on its salt form, can act as an electrolyte supplement or as an adjunct in certain hypertensive emergencies (notably pre-eclampsia/eclampsia), where it may provide additional vasodilatory effects and help prevent seizures. There is no widely recognized fixed-dose pharmaceutical product combining these two agents; their co-administration may occur in specific clinical scenarios such as severe hypertension or pre-eclampsia/eclampsia management. The mechanism of action for hydralazine involves interference with calcium transport in vascular smooth muscle cells, while magnesium acts through multiple mechanisms including antagonism of calcium channels and stabilization of excitable membranes[3][6].
