Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Hydrochlorothiazide + triamterene is a fixed-dose combination medication consisting of two diuretics used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and edema (fluid retention). Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic that works by increasing the excretion of sodium and water from the kidneys, thereby lowering blood pressure. Triamterene is a potassium-sparing diuretic that helps prevent excessive loss of potassium caused by hydrochlorothiazide. This combination is particularly indicated for patients at risk of hypokalemia (low potassium levels) or those who have developed hypokalemia on thiazides alone. The drug acts primarily through renal mechanisms to promote natriuresis while maintaining potassium balance[1][4][8].
