Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Hydrocodone bitartrate + guaifenesin is a fixed-dose combination pharmaceutical product consisting of the opioid antitussive hydrocodone bitartrate and the expectorant guaifenesin. Hydrocodone acts as a centrally-acting cough suppressant by binding to mu-opioid receptors in the medullary respiratory center, effectively elevating the cough threshold. Guaifenesin functions as an expectorant by increasing the volume and reducing the viscosity of secretions in the trachea and bronchi, thereby facilitating the removal of mucus through ciliary action and coughing. This combination is indicated for the symptomatic relief of non-productive cough and to loosen tenacious mucus associated with the common cold or upper respiratory tract infections in adults aged 18 and older. Due to the presence of hydrocodone, the product is classified as a Schedule II or III controlled substance, carrying significant risks of addiction, abuse, misuse, and respiratory depression.
